It is like asking the soldiers to live off the land in a desert, to save the country. You have to be willing to support whoever you expect to help you out.
When the firemen come and out you fire you have to be willing to give them a little perk to make them comfortable. He is the one making the sacrifice for the country, He should be will supported and made comfortable as possible so that the can do his job well.

How is it debasing uself fi live eena u own house before, wile, n afta being in office? having read wat di bank provide fi fi dem president n remembering a much debated comment made during di banking fiasco wich led to Finsac, n of wich much was made of a den govament minista purportedly saying dat a black bank man tink him can live betta dan a minista, u know seh since bank provide 2 helper , govament muss provide more r less? ..so look at all dat expense dat could be saved in this new era of putting country before pomp n circumstance....

I think they should remove State funded perks such as housing but until then why live in Squalor?
Of course this is one of the problems of the New JLP Government that that were warned about.

Many folks were telling them to make a full accounting of they got, what they saw, what broke and what was good.
When the story broke about the state of some of the residences instead of making a full accounting they sought to suppress it.

Who knows what the 60Mil was spent on?
It could be the place was really trashed and <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">why should he live in Squalor?</span>

Let say this should happen (and in the case of Mike Henry it has happened. That man has lost so much through politics...but), until that day come, should he really be resigned to <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">live in squalor?</span>

The Port Authority of Jamaica is denying a Gleaner report that it has spent more than $60 million to buy and refurbish the house in which the transport minister Mike Henry is now living.

The Port Authority said instead it purchased and upgraded the upper St Andrew house for $49.46 million.

But the authority said the transport minister is yet to start paying his monthly rental of $20,000 for the upscale residence located at 5 Millsborough Crescent.

The transport minister Mike Henry would not offer detailed comments on the controversy over the multimillion-dollar house in which he is living.

He said he is preparing a full statement to be released in a matter of days.

There has been widespread controversy over the minister’s house because of the amount of money that has been spent to acquire and upgrade it especially given the poor state of the national economy.

In outlining its expenditure, the Port Authority has said between October and November 2007, the house was valued at $65 million by the National Land Agency and at $60 - $65 million by a private entity called Allison Pitter and Company.

But the Authority said it bought the house for $35 million from the now defunct government entity the Jamaica Omnibus Service Company (JOS).

The Authority said another $14.46 million dollars was spent to upgrade the house.

This includes $12.32 million for what the Port Authority calls extensive work relating to the revamping of the piping system, roof repairs, general refurbishing, equipment, appliances and painting.

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">According to the Port Authority, the other $2.14 million was spent on the construction of a gabion retaining wall.

This puts the grand total for the purchase of the house and the repairs at $49.46 million. </span>

Mr Henry has been reported in the media as justifying the expenses suggesting that the house was in a poor condition and he’s not accustomed to <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">living in squalor</span>.

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Yesterday, Mr Henry’s ministry released 10 photographs seeking to support his claim.</span>

The pictures indicate that there were missing wall tiles from two bathrooms at the house, that sections of the ceiling had watermarks due to a leaking roof, and that one of the cupboards had been partly torn down.

Last night we were unable to get a comment from the former transport minister Robert Pickersgill on whether that was the state in which he left the house in September 2007.

But in a July 26 Gleaner article, the former transport minister rejected assertions that the house was not habitable.

In the meantime, the Port Authority has revealed that Mike Henry has not been paying the proposed $20,000 monthly rental for the upscale house.

According to the Authority a lease agreement was sent to Mr Henry for signing with the proposed monthly rental effective June 2008 but it said the transport minister is yet to sign the agreement.

It was purchased plus renovations for under the lower valuation and as for the rent, who knows what is the going rate? Maybe that is what all the State provided quarters rent for regardless of valuation.

There are two ways for the government to provide housing to cabinet ministers:

-Purchasing a house to be rented to a minister

-Paying an housing allowance to a minister who in turn
would rent his own accomodation.


There are many advantages to the first option. Real estate offers historically the best return on investment and is a good way to store capital. If the government paid 50million for a house that's alreadyvalued at 60 milliion, they already made 10 million.

If a housing allowance was paid to a minister, it would have to be at least $315,000/month in order to rent a decent house in a good location in today's market. Chances are, that if the allowance was paid to the ministers, most would opt to keep the cash and commute from the houses they already own. So that option is just a waste of taxpayer money.

When you compare a monthy expanse of $315,000/mo to a one time investment of 50 million, after 13 years, the latter becomes a cheaper option for the government. Since there will always be the requirement for ministrarial accomodation no matter what party is in office, it's cheaper for the government in the long term to purchase real property.

The $20,000 nominal monthy fee that Mr. Henry should be paying, is most likely just covering the interest on the government's mortgage. What I don't agree with is why Mr. Henry is not paying that small fee. It won't bruk his pocket and is just bad publicity.
